UNFPA Africa Regional Director, Bunmi Makinwa Arrives In Sierra Leone For The Launch Of CARMNA

Mr. Bunmi Makinwa is the Director of the UNFPA Africa Regional Office, responsible for the oversight and management of UNFPA regional policy and programmes, and offices in 45 Sub-Saharan African countries.  From 2006 to 2008, Mr. Makinwa was Director of UNAIDS New York Office, where he successfully re-positioned the UNAIDS New York Office as the source of policy, information and partnerships on AIDS for Ambassadors, political leaders, UN, and large civil society organizations.

From 2003-2006, Mr. Makinwa was UNAIDS Representative to the African Union Commission and the UN Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, developing and implementing the strategic positioning of AIDS with heads of state and government of Africa. Between 2000 and 2003, he served as Team Leader of the UNAIDS Inter-country Team for Eastern and Southern Africa.  Mr. Makinwa has held previous positions with the World Health Organization, Family Health International and Program for Appropriate Technology in Health.

His underlying strategy includes the use of communication and negotiation to build coalition and collaboration among disparate groups and organizations as well as to enhance management.

Bunmi has also contributed to the research that went into the book “African-Centred Management Education: A New Paradigm for an Emerging Continent” by Professor David N Abdulai.

During the Oscar Pistorius trial for the death of Reeva Steenkamp, Bunmi was quoted in an article published by leading South African online news platform News24. The piece, titled, “5 things the world’s saying about Oscar’s trial” and written by Emma Thelwell, quoted Bunmi as saying: The fate of Steenkamp and Pistorius is sealed, as far as Nigeria’s All Africa is concerned. “There will be losers and losers only,” writes Bunmi Makinwa from Lagos.

In Kamal Tayo Oropo’s piece for the Nigerian paper The Guardian titled, “Nigeria Must Show More Concern Over Migrants Deaths On The Mediterranean“, Bunmi was heavily quoted throughout.
